Welcome to Tamara Lodge

The Tamara Backpackers Lodge strives to offer a superior standard within the Backpacker category of accommodation. You will enjoy style, serenity and space while still located in the heart of the city.

Have a listen to our cool jingle, courtesy of the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra. We love it!

Our elegant lodge enjoys an outstanding location on the banks of the majestic Whanganui River with views of Mt Ruapehu. We are less than 1km from Whanganui’s main street, Victoria Ave.

The Lodge

The Tamara Lodge is a spacious Edwardian villa built in 1904 as a large private home. It has been used in a variety of ways over time including a boarding house, private hotel and 30 years as a maternity home called Cairnbrae. In 1993, it became the Tamara Backpackers Lodge and has evolved to be a place to return to.
